Delta College Practical Nursing Program Graduates 100th Class

In January 2019, Delta College nursing proudly graduates its 100th practical nursing class. Like Delta College itself, the program has had a long and successful history. Students who are part of the program join this legacy. They are choosing to improve their career options and potentially change their lives.

Delta College Practical Nursing

In Baton Rouge, Delta College has offered a Practical Nursing program since 1994. In that first class, 27 students graduated. And perhaps more importantly, all 27 graduates passed their licensure exam! Today—25 years later—Delta College has seen our 100th LPN class of graduate. Those 100 classes represent more than 1,600 practical nursing students. With this degree, they have the opportunity to start a new nursing career.

What Is A Licensed Practical Nurse?

A licensed practical nurse (LPN) provides basic medical care to patients. They work at physicians’ offices, hospitals, retirement communities, and clinics. They provide much-needed services to today’s society. The Bureau of Labor Statistic is a federal entity that releases statistics about U.S. jobs. According to its studies, Louisiana is a top employer of licensed practical nurses. And LPNs in the U.S. earn a median salary of $45,000 a year! Sound good to you? Some of the duties LPNs take care of on a daily basis include:

  • Monitor patients’ health and check vitals
  • Administer basic nursing care, including changing bandages and inserting catheters.
  • Provide for the basic comfort of patients, such as helping them bathe or dress
  • Discuss health care with patients and listen to their concerns
  • Report patients’ status to registered nurses and doctors
  • Keep records of patients’ health
