Delta College Participates in College and Career Night

Delta College of Baton Rouge At The Fair

Delta College admissions representative Bob Goodrich represented Delta College at the annual East Ascension High SchoolDonaldsonville High School College and Career Night on Tuesday, September 9, 2014. The fair saw high attendance from their student bodies and a large number of parent participants. Delta College of Baton Rouge was proud to be able to participate in this.

The administration of East Ascension Parish schools expressed appreciation in Delta College’s participation in the event, recognizing that many high school graduates will choose to seek training for a career from colleges such as Delta College, rather than attending a four year institution.

Students showed a high level of interest in the higher education programs offered by Delta College, including practical nursing, graphic design, dental assistant and business office assistant.

Delta College hopes to participate in the annual college and career night again next year!

The Sheila Watts Barrow “Butterfly” Scholarship

The  Sheila Watts Barrow “Butterfly” Scholarship has been established to honor the memory of Sheila Watts Barrow, Class of ’95, the president of the Charter Practical Nursing Class at Delta College.  Sheila was a talented and dedicated nurse, a wife, mother, and wonderful friend, and to keep her memory alive, the scholarship has been established by her faculty and friends at Delta College.

Each year a student who has reached the mid-point of their nursing program at Delta and completed the application process will be selected as the recipient of this award.  The first scholarship will be presented in November of 2014.   The award selection committee is comprised of the four women who were Sheila’s nursing instructors and four of her classmates, Class of ’95.  Sheila’s daughter also sits on the committee.

Donations to the Scholarship Fund are always welcome.  For further information contact Barbara Demarest at 225-756-8948.

Ms. Demarest, representing the scholarship committee, met with our day & night students on last Wednesday & Thursday to present the Butterfly Scholarship.  It was well received by the students.  Students must submit the requested information (a letter of recommendation from a classroom & clinical instructor, a personal essay & a transcript) no later than September 12, 2014 to be considered for the scholarship.

Delta College Practical Nursing Students Wow Community with Professionalism and Helpful Attitudes

I want to take time to tell you how impressed and proud I was of our practical nursing students that represented Delta College on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at the Martin Luther King Community Center Back to School Event. They were very professional in their appearance, attitude and performance.  They all took blood pressure, etc. for hundreds of people and were very patient with each person they helped. They also helped in directing adults and children to the various organizations throughout the Center.  Ms. Maxine Watts, Our Lady Of the Lake Special Events Coordinator, told me that when she organizes such events as this one, she always asks for student practical nurses from Delta College because of their professionalism, promptness and their cooperative attitudes…This event was a very important event held in the Gus Young area of our city.  I had numerous people come up to me and tell me they either graduated from Delta or a Family member is presently attending or graduated from our school.  This event…was well worth our participation.

Sincerely,

Bob Goodrich
